Who Really Needs Protein? Spoiler: Everyone

Protein Isn’t Just for Gym Bros

For years protein has been marketed like it’s a secret weapon only for bodybuilders. Truth is your body doesn’t care whether you’re lifting dumbbells or lifting grocery bags. Protein is the building block of your muscles, skin, hair, and even hormones. Every single cell in your body uses it. So yes, even if you’ve never set foot in a gym, you need it.

"Protein isn’t a trend. It’s a lifelong necessity."

Why It’s Crucial for Younger People

Kids and young adults are in full-on construction mode. Their bones are getting stronger, muscles are growing, and the brain is developing. Protein fuels all of this. Without enough, growth can slow down, energy dips, and the immune system suffers. Think of it like trying to build a house with half the bricks missing.

Why It’s Just as Important for Older People

Here’s something many people overlook. As we age, we naturally start losing muscle mass  a sneaky process called sarcopenia. That’s why older people often feel weaker or face mobility issues. Getting enough protein helps slow this down, keeps bones strong, and supports recovery from everyday wear and tear. It’s one of the simplest ways to stay independent and active for longer.

Whole Foods First, But…

The best way to get protein is from whole foods. Lentils, beans, paneer, curd, tofu, eggs, chicken, fish, nuts  India’s kitchens are already full of them. But life isn’t always that neat. Some people are vegetarian or vegan, some have allergies, and others just don’t have the time to cook elaborate meals every day. That’s where supplements step in.

The Supplement Myth

There’s a weird myth floating around that protein supplements are harmful. The truth? They’re just concentrated sources of protein  made from things like peas, rice, or whey. They’re safe when used properly, especially if you’re struggling to meet your needs through food. The real danger is under-eating protein for years and then wondering why your energy, strength, or recovery feels off.

The Bottom Line

Protein is for everyone. Age doesn’t matter. Gym membership doesn’t matter. What matters is that you consistently give your body the raw materials it needs to repair, grow, and thrive. Aim for whole foods first. Use supplements if your diet or schedule leaves gaps. What you definitely shouldn’t do is ignore protein.

So next time someone says “protein is only for gym guys,” just smile and pass them the dal.
